Got a ductless problem?

Ok. It's true. Ductless mini split heat pumps are a bit different. Practically every week in the spring and fall, one of our heat pump techs arrives on a service call only to find out that the problem was simple and might have been easily resolved by the owner. Before you call us, you may want to check these simple things:

  • Remote Control Batteries: If your mini split heat pump uses a hand-held remote change the batteries if you have not done so recently.
  • Air Filters: Dirty filters can cause problems. Check your indoor unit filters and clean them now if they they are anything less than clean.
  • Do you have the system in the correct mode? During seasonal transitions sometimes you want cooling, but if your heat pump is still in "Heat" mode cooling won't start. Check to ensure that you system is set to "Auto", or the correct mode for the season.
  • Check you desired temperature: Make sure that at least one zone is set to on and the desired temperature is set well below ambient for cooling operation, or well above ambient for heating operation.
  • Got power? If no lights are appearing on your indoor unit(s) when you try to communicate with them check your power supply. Check the circuit breaker to ensure that power to the outdoor unit is on, and check the outdoor disconnect that is typically near the outdoor unit.
  • If you are in heating mode, is your system in "Defrost"?: If you are operating in the heat mode, make sure that your system is not in “Defrost” mode. If it is, "defrost" should complete within a few minutes and heating operations should then resume.
  • Time out? Some mini split systems incorporate a time delay on system start-up or change-over. After turning the system on or changing modes, give it a few minutes.

We're here to help with any gas furnace problems your experiencing. If the simpler issues above don't resolve your problem then you'll need our help.

Common gas furnace problems that require a Pro include:

  • Failure to Light: If you have an older furnace you probably have a pilot light. Make sure that the pilot is lit. If you have electronic ignition, it is probably either an intermittent pilot, or a hot surface ignition system. These component may just need to be cleaned, or replacement ignition component might be needed.
  • Flue Gas and Combustion Air: Proper venting of your gas furnace is critical. Improperly vented gas equipment can leak carbon monoxide into your home and this can be extremely dangerous. If you have an older non-condensing furnace, you have a chimney or b-vent system that terminates through the roof. All of this metal venting needs to be properly secure and free of corrosion. If you have a 90%+ condensing furnace, your system probably has a plastic venting system including an air intake that terminates out the sidewall for through the roof.
  • Blower Motor Failures: Does your furnace light, but the blower does not come on? Perhaps you have a failed blower motor, fan switch, or blower door safety switch.
  • Moisture Where is Does Not Belong: If you have a condensing furnace, if produces water as a byproduct of combustion. If this is accumulating in the vent system, or not draining properly it can cause intermittent failures and damage to your home.
  • Your Heat Exchanger: Your gas furnace heat exchanger protects your family from dangerous carbon monoxide so it must be checked to ensure that it is sound and safe. If you notice any unusual odors, or if any corrosion or cracks are observed in your heat exchanger then it's time for a new furnace.

Mini Split Heat Pump Repair Issues

We firmly believe that ductless mini split heat pumps are a great choice for Michigan and Indiana homes and businesses. Because they are relatively simple to install, many local systems are installed by inexperienced contractors or even DIY. However, inexperience can lead to problems that only a Pro can fix:

Installation issues caused by rookie mistakes:

  • Refrigerant Loss: If your heat pump has reduced system capacity within weeks or months of first install, you probably have lost system refrigerant through improper refrigerant piping.
  • Mechanical Damage: Refrigerant lines need to be properly installed, supported and protected. If this is not done properly, refrigerant loss or capacity loss can occur even years after installation.
  • Condensation Issue: Indoor units must be installed properly. During cooling operation moisture is removed from the air and captured in a condensate tray in the indoor unit. If the indoor unit is improperly installed this condensate can spill out into the room, or even inside concealed spaces causing mold or water damage.
  • Improper Equipment Sizing: Inconsistent temperature or wide temperature swings are often cause by improper system or zone sizing. If your system is too large, it will short cycle, particularly on milder days and will not properly control humidity.
  • Wintertime Freeze-ups: Outdoor units must be properly mounted securely above average snow level. Improperly mounted outdoor units can fail to properly defrost and all or part of the outdoor coil will be completely covered with ice reducing capacity and efficiency.

Maintenance Issues:

  • Keep Them Clean! Changes in heating or cooling capability over time often caused by dirty indoor filters or coils. Keeping indoor air filter clean is very important.
  • Outdoor Debris: Capacity issues caused by a dirty or clogged outdoor coil.
