Got an Air Conditioning Problem?

Practically every day on the first few hot days of summer, one of our AC techs arrives on a service call only to find out that the problem was simple and might have been easily resolved by the owner. Before you call us, you may want to check these simple things:

  • Got power? If no lights or other operating indicators appear on your indoor unit when you try to initiate cooling check your power supply. Check the circuit breaker to ensure that power to the outdoor unit is on, and check the outdoor disconnect that is typically near the outdoor unit.
  • Thermostat Settings and Battery: During seasonal transitions sometimes you want cooling, but if your HVAC system is still in "Heat" mode so cooling won't start. Check to ensure that you system is set to "Auto", or the "Cooling" mode and the desired temperature is well below current room temperature. If your thermostat has disposable batteries change them now if you have not done so recently.
  • Air Filters: Dirty filters can cause problems. Check your ac air filters. If they are disposable replace them now. If they are serviceable, clean them now if they they are anything less than sparkling.
  • Check Your Air Distribution System: Make sure that most or all of your system grills and registers are open a free of obstructions.
  • If you are in heating mode, is your system in "Defrost"?: If you are operating in the heat mode, make sure that your system is not in “Defrost” mode. If it is, "defrost" should complete within a few minutes and heating operations should then resume.
  • Check your indoor coil: If dirty filters or closed registers have caused reduced airflow, it is possible that your indoor coil is iced up. If it is, after restoring proper air flow, change your system to fan only operation until the ice on your indoor coil and refrigerant lines is melted, then restart the cooling mode.

Air Conditioning Repair Issues

Once you've lived with a properly installed efficient AC system, you'll never want to live without one. Because they are relatively simple to install, many local systems are installed by inexperienced contractors or even DIY. However, inexperience can lead to problems that only a Pro can fix:

AC issues caused by rookie installer mistakes:

  • Refrigerant Loss: If your air conditioner has reduced system capacity within weeks or months of first install, you probably have lost system refrigerant through improper refrigerant piping.
  • Mechanical Damage: Refrigerant lines need to be properly installed, supported and protected. If this is not done properly, refrigerant loss or capacity loss can occur even years after installation.
  • Condensation Issues: Your indoor coil must be install properly. During cooling operation condensation is removed from the air and captured in a condensate tray in the indoor coil. If the indoor coil is improperly installed this condensate can spill out onto the ac or air handler and the floor, or even inside concealed spaces causing mold or property damage.
  • Improper Equipment Sizing: Inconsistent temperature or wide temperature swings are often cause by improper system sizing. If your system is too large, it will short cycle, particularly on milder days and will not properly control humidity.
  • Wiring Issues: Properly sizing the electrical service to your AC system is a must. Undersized supply voltage will cause nuisance trips, dimming lights, and inconsistent operation.
  • Maintenance Issues:
  • Keep Everything Clean! Changes in cooling capability over time are often caused by dirty indoor filters or coils. Keeping indoor air filter clean is very important.
  • Outdoor Debris: Capacity issues caused by a dirty or clogged outdoor coil. .
