Eleven Maintenance Checks for Your Geothermal Heat Pump System:

Because ground source heat pumps extract heat from a sealed ground source heat exchanger, they operating in a very consistent environment. However, professional maintenance and a complete system check will ensure that your HVAC is both efficient and reliable. These are primary system components we will evaluate and service as necessary:

  • Initial visual inspections: Is the system clean? Is there evidence of loop system or condensation leaks? Is all the control and power wiring secure?
  • Controls: Is your thermostat set properly? If it has a battery, we will change it now. If you have a programmable thermostat, review it's programming to ensure that your thermostat is calling for AC.
  • Ducted system air filters: Clean air filters are a must for both indoor air quality and system efficiency. If your system has disposal filters we'll replace them now. If they are permanent filters we'll clean them.
  • Indoor coil: The indoor coil transfers heat to or from your ground loop. We'll inspect the indoor coil and clean if necessary.
  • Check indoor airflow: We'll make sure that your ductwork is secure, insulated well sealed. We verify that most grills and registers throughout your conditioned space are open and free of obstructions.
  • Your compressor: This is the heart of your system. We'll check compressor amperage to ensure efficient operation. We'll also check other electrical controls including the contractor, controls system and system capacitors.
  • Indoor blower motor: We'll check the amperage on your indoor air blower motor. We check the condition of your indoor blower wheel and clean if necessary.
  • Ground loop system: The beauty of your geothermal heat pump is that it extracts heat from the temperate conditions a few feet below the ground's surface (or vertical drill loops) via a pipe network and a pumped water solution. We check the loop pressure and system pump.
  • Condensation or moisture: A critical part of you heat pump conditioning is summer humidity control. Water is produced as a byproduct of AC operation. We'll check the condensation system including and drains or condensation pumps.
  • Complete operating check: After service, we'll start and operate your geothermal heat pump in both heating and cooling modes. We'll document system voltages and temperature rises across the indoor coil and ground loop.
  • Clean-up and Report: We'll carefully clean our work area. We will provide written documentation of our service and not any areas of concern.
